Joinings is a collection of pieces written during the six months from October 2024 to March 2025. Having embraced functional harmony, in the Cold Wind Sonata I was keen to explore the sophisticated design of sonata form. Greensleeves is a soulful centuries-old song that makes a suitable theme upon which to base a simple set of variations. Ripples II is an enhanced version for piano of my piece Ripples (1995) for guitar and electronics. Nocturne (for Stephanya) explores the romantic sound world of Chopin’s Nocturnes, with a twist of contemporary musical sensibility. Elegy grew out of the a dissonant chord progression, around which additional materials are fashioned to give a meaningful context for musical expression of such intensity. Things We Said Today (by Lennon/McCartney) satisfies a desire to include familiar material on the album, and represents my interest in creating solo piano renditions of popular songs.
